Mr Clegg, leader of the Liberal Democrats said: "It is a very exciting opportunity for everyone in Britain who wants fairness and real change, who wants something different.

“Thirteen years of a Labour government has been thirteen years of broken promises. Rising unemployment, economic recession and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are not what local people expected from Tony Blair and Gordon Brown.

“Another familiar comment is that on far too many issues ‘Labour are just like the Conservatives’. People want a real change and the only party that will provide it is the Liberal Democrats.
"If elected as your truly local Member of Parliament I promise to be a strong local champion for our community and will work hard to end years of Labour and Conservative neglect.
